Beale Afb Titan 1-b290.81PenningtonBetween 1959 and 1965, the United States Air Force acquired 290.81 acres from various private property owners. The site was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District from 1960 to 1962 and was designed with all essential facilities built underground to withstand a nuclear attack. The missile complex was active from 1962 through 1965. Deactivation of the site began on 31 March 1965, and by 22 June 1965, the Department of Defense (DoD) reported the site excess and transferred the property to the General ServicesAdministration (GSA). In June 1961, private residents acquired 64.63 acres at and adjacent to the main missile complex area. The site is currently under private ownership and is used for livestock grazing. Based on the foregoing findings of fact, the site has been determined to be formerly used bythe DoD. Therefore, it is eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites, established under 10 U.S.C. 2701 et seq.
