The afternoon practice didn't have the fireworks of the morning session (thanks, Frank Gore) but it had its interesting moments. At one point, the 49ers first-team offense ran a red-zone drill from inside the 20-yard line. The Raiders seemed to have the 49ers' number until the final play when Shaun Hill scrambled to his left and found Josh Morgan in the end zone for a touchdown.
Both quarterbacks looked good in the next drill, which appeared to be a blitz pick-up drill. That is, the Raiders were sending extra rushers up the middle on just about every snap. The goal for the 49ers quarterback was to sidestep the rush and find the open receiver. Hill threw eight passes and completed seven. Smith, meanwhile, was five for five in that particular drill, including a nice pass and nicer catch by Arnaz Battle at the sideline. Those numbers might be a bit inflated. Since there was no sacking of the quarterback, defensive players instead merely tagged the QB and the play went on.
Safety Michael Lewis suffered a concussion in the early practice and was held out for the afternoon. Depending on the severity, he could miss Saturday's game at Candlestick Park. If that's the case, look for Mark Roman to start alongside Dashon Goldson. Marvel Smith still hasn't been cleared for a full practice. He was held out of the afternoon session. Right now, the safe money is on Adam Snyder to start the season at right tackle.
Still no fights. At best there were raised tempers when Glen Coffee took exception to what he considered rough treatment by linebacker Ricky Brown, the guy who was pancaked by Gore earlier in the day. The two teams will meet again at 8:30 a.m. ... By the way, one of the more clever commenters suggested "Pancakes and Coffee" as the nickname for the Gore-Coffee duo. Not too shabby. But is it better than "Frank & Beans?"
