The "couple of weeks" that receiver Brandon Jones was expected to miss turned into eight weeks when 49ers coach Mike Singletary had his press conference this morning. Asked about the prospect of Jones missing a couple of weeks, the time period given by a team spokesman earlier this morning, Singletary said, "Oh, it's going to be longer than a couple of weeks. It's going to be more like eight weeks." Why the discrepancy? Trainers looked at an x-ray of Jones' right shoulder later in the morning that revealed a fracture, not merely an AC joint sprain, which was the early diagnosis. Jones suffered the injury while diving for a ball in Thursday's afternoon practice. Dominique Zeigler, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Micheal Spurlock all are candidates to replace Jones as the team's de facto No. 3 receiver.
