Dan Walters has been a California journalist for more than 40 years. He joined The Sacramento Union's Capitol bureau in 1975 and, six years later, started the state's only daily newspaper column devoted to California's politics, economy and social events. He moved his column to The Sacramento Bee in 1984 and it now appears in more than 50 California newspapers. Question: Recently I read a artical in the Bee regarding the possible bribbing of a Califonia Highway Patrol commissioner in the procurement of the CHP BMW motorcycles. Has there bee any settelment or conviction in this matter? If so, where could I secure a copy of such information? Mahalo,

Answer: As far as we know, there's no action being contemplated against former CHP Commissioner Spike Helmick, who has retired. He was at the center of reports that top CHP officials were entertained by motorcycle maker BMW.
