In this interesting report on how much Californians can afford to spend on health care, the California Budget Project and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research say that the typical single adult with private health coverage now spends about $66 a month on premiums and about $28 a month in out-of-pocket costs. For a family of four, the typical cost is $150 a month in premiums and $83 out of pocket. I would have expected those numbers to be higher. Much higher.
The authors are recommending that the government provide health care for free to families making $41,000 or less, and subsidize it for families with incomes of up to $62,000.
