Steve Levy has some interesting thoughts here on the relationship between undocumented immigrant workers who might be fired under a Bush Administration inititiave and the unemployed who are supposed to replace them in the workforce. Bottom line: In California, at least, there are not enough unemployed people to fill all those jobs, and there's a mismatch between the unemployed and the jobs now held by illegal immigrants. The unemployed tend to be more highly educated and trained for professional and office jobs while the immigrants tend to be in service and construction industries.
