"You Commie, homo-loving sons of guns," Sean Penn began his acceptance speech last night for the best actor honor at the Academy Awards.
Penn played 1970s gay rights activist Harvey Milk, who was murdered in San Francisco City Hall, in "Milk."
In his speech, Penn turned to chastise supporters of Proposition 8, the California gay marriage ban that passed last fall.
"I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support," Penn said.
"We've got to have equal rights for everyone," he added.
The Oscars is one of the year's top-watched television programs and Penn's highlighting of the ballot was one more sign that California has become ground zero in the gay marriage fight.
Another sign? This blogger was traveling in Seattle over the weekend and walking through Pike Place Market where an ACLU worker held a sign "Overturn Proposition 8."
Watch Penn's speech below. The relevant portion begins after the 2:30 mark.
