Hoping the end of the regular legislative session will provide a breather from hot-button issues around the Capitol?
The Commission on the 21st Century Economy meets in Berkeley today to continue tinkering with its recommendations for overhauling the state's tax system.
At last week's meeting, commission members cast their plan as a "general approach" that will most likely merit more scrutiny and changes from the Legislature.
That's a bad sign for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wanted lawmakers to take up the panel's plan with an up-or-down vote during a special session he's said he'll call later this month.
Commissioners said last week that today could be the day they vote on their final plan. The commission's already-delayed deadline for submitting its recommendations for overhauling the state's tax system is next Sunday.
On to other divisive issues...
State Auditor Elaine Howle holds a public hearing at the Crest Theater to discuss the process for picking who sits on the Citizens Redistricting Commission, which will be tasked with redrawing for the state legislative and Board of Equalization districts after the 2010 census.
The entryway of the Crest invites visitors: "When you pass thru this portal leave all your cares behind."
We're willing to bet the chance that attendees will leave their cares at the door is probably a whole lot slimmer than Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who's the subject of a documentary now airing on the theater's big screen.
