Capitol Alert

The latest on California politics and government

Over here at 925 L St., the worker bees of the Legislative Counsel decided to have themselves a little Halloween potluck. With the state's bill drafters occupying parts of at least seven floors in the downtown building, they decided to host a progressive potluck, beginning with appetizers on the 9th floor all the way to afternoon dessert in the basement at 3 p.m.

So I decided to check out what all the fuss was about (and why the elevators were clogged with the costumed). Down I went to the basement, which had been transformed into a cobweb-filled cemetery.

Seeing as this was a leg counsel affair, there was some Capitol-style humor, including a bloody hand sticking out of a "Book of Dead Bills." There were two folks relaxing with a soda who didn't give their names.

Up to the second floor I continued, where a dozen or so leg counselors were munching on pizza. To one prisoner-garbed woman, I introduced myself as a reporter for The Bee. We chatted for a moment until I took out my notebook.

Then, she turned and ran. Literally. All the way to the elevators.

I guess ghouls, goblins and ghosts simply can't compete with a notepad.
