Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier has confirmed that she's considering jumping in the already crowded field of attorney general hopefuls.
The buzz that Speier, a freshman congresswoman and 20-year veteran of the state Legislature, was weighing a run was first reported by The San Francisco Chronicle's Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross and confirmed by Speier at a Thursday appearance in San Mateo.
San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, Facebook executive Chris Kelly, former Los Angeles District Attorney Rocky Delgadillo and Assemblymen Ted Lieu, Pedro Nava, and Alberto Torrico are all vying to be the Democrats' nominee for to be the state's top law enforcement official.
Speier's entry into the AG race would leave the 12th Congressional District seat up for grabs. Democratic state legislators Jerry Hill, Fiona Ma and Leland Yee told The San Mateo Daily Journal they might run for that seat, which Speier won in a special election following the death of former Rep. Tom Lantos.
Also on the AG front, the dean of Chapman University's law school, John Eastman, has resigned to focus on his run for the Republican nomination. He'll likely face state Sen. Tom Harman and Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley in the June primary.
