The Senate will convene for a floor session and is expected to take up most of the special session budget proposals approved by the Senate Budget Committee earlier this week.
Click here for a spreadsheet detailing the proposals that Senate Democrats say would chip away at about $5 billion of the state's deficit -- which is expected to swell to about $20 billion by the end of the 2010-2011 fiscal year.
One piece that isn't expected to make it to the floor quite yet? The Senate Democrats' gas-tax swap proposal.
Also on tap today, Democratic Assemblyman Isadore Hall, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Speaker-elect John A. Pérez and others are holding a press conference to demand a full investigation into the "Compton Cookout," an alleged college party that Hall described as a "hateful act" of African American stereotyping.
Stirring outrage was an off-campus social event last weekend, allegedly by members of several fraternities at the University of California, San Diego, that mocked Black History Month.
A Facebook invite urged female party-goers to dress as "ghetto chicks" with gold teeth, cheap clothes, a cheap weave and to "start fights and drama." Chicken, watermelon and "Kegs of Natty" were among refreshments to be served.
"I'm outraged," said Hall, D-Compton, who will demand that UCSD consider suspending the perpetrators, their fraternities, and to determine whether any public funds were used to organize or promote the event. "There should be no slack provided."
Penny Rue, UCSD vice chancellor, said the university is investigating and is "dismayed and disheartened" by the event, which she characterized as the "grossest form of stereotyping."
A FLURRY OF BILLS: With tomorrow's deadline for submitting new legislation looming, expect to hear lots of talk from legislators touting their new proposals.
