From Stan Oklobdzija:
A Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy was recently robbed of his gun, his laptop and a GPS device outside the Marriott Courtyard on White Rock Road in Rancho Cordova, sheriff's officials said Wednesday.
At about 1 p.m. July 30, the deputy, a detective who's been assigned to an FBI task force, was attending a training class at the hotel on the 10600 block of White Rock Road, said Sgt. Tim Curran, the sheriff's spokesman.
According to Curran, those attending the course were not allowed to bring their weapons into the hotel. So the deputy, who sheriff's officials are not naming, left his semi-automatic pistol in the car, one the FBI had provided for him, Curran said. The gun was the deputy's personal weapon that he used on duty, as per sheriff's department policy, Curran said.
The detective came out of the class to find his window broken and the items missing. The laptop, which was assigned to the detective from the sheriff's department, did not contain any classified information, Curran said. The GPS device belonged to the detective, he said.
The Sheriff's Department has no suspects, Curran said.
While the theft of a firearm certainly raises concerns, Curran said, theft from sheriff's department employees in general is far from rare.
"This happens about once a year," he said.
