From David Richie:
The California Highway Patrol is seeking the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision Sunday night at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Lincoln Oaks Drive in Fair Oaks.
The incident occurred about 8:35 p.m. as Michael Winnett, 46, of Citrus Heights, rode his 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan westbound on Madison Avenue. An as-yet unidentified driver in a 1991 Hyundai Elantra pulled out to make a left-hand turn on to Madison Avenue and evidently failed to see the approaching motorcycle, said Officer Lizz Dutton, CHP spokeswoman.
The Hyundai struck the motorcycle and Winnett was thrown about 30 feet. At that point the driver of the Hyundai jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the scene, Dutton said.
Winnett was wearing a helmet but suffered extensive injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Carmichael, where he died approximately 26 hours after the collision.
CHP investigators would like to talk to anybody who witnessed the collision or saw the driver of the Hyundai fleeing the scene. Witnesses can call the CHP North Area office at (916) 338-6710.
