From Niesha Lofing:

What began as one woman's alleged attempt to cash a stolen check at a Sacramento bank ended in the arrest of five people Tuesday.

The incident began about 5:30 p.m. when a woman allegedly tried to cash a stolen check at the Washington Mutual at 4701 Freeport Blvd., said Sacramento police Officer Konrad Von Schoech.

The bank teller became suspicious because the signature didn't seem to match, the check number was out of sequence and the woman said she "'was in a hurry and needed to leave,'" he said.

Bank personnel called police and the man whose check had allegedly been stolen, and obtained a description of the car the woman drove off in, Von Schoech said.

A police officer driving near Franklin Boulevard and Second Avenue spotted the vehicle. When the officer stopped the car, one of the passengers jumped out of the vehicle and ran away, he said.

Another police officer captured the man, Nicholas Newsome, 19, who allegedly was possessing two loaded handguns, Von Schoech said.

Newsome (left photo) was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle while in a public place, participating in a criminal street gang, tampering with an identification number of a weapon and resisting arrest.

He is being held on $35,000 bail in Sacramento County Main Jail, according to online jail information.

The other three people in the car also were detained and a box of ammunition was found in the vehicle, Von Schoech said.

John Burroughs (second from left photo), 33, was arrested on suspicion of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and a parole violation. He is being held without bail in Sacramento County Main Jail.

John Parker (third from left photo), 28, was arrested on suspicion of violation of parole and also is being without bail in Sacramento County Main Jail.

Vanessa Guevara (right photo), 27, the woman who allegedly attempted to pass the check, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property, making, passing or possessing a fictitious check and possessing, receiving or uttering forged paper.

She was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail and was released today, according to online jail information.

While conducting a parole search at Parker's house, officers also arrested a woman there on two no-bail warrants, Von Schoech said.

The woman's identity is not available.

Von Schoech said the incident at the bank led to a "pretty good bust."

"That's usually how it begins," he said. "A routine call can turn into something like this."
