From Bill Lindelof:
A 31-year-old Sacramento woman arrested Sunday on suspicion of drowning her 3-year-old daughter will make her initial appearance in court Tuesday.
Anul Malik Ram was booked into Sacramento County jail on suspicion of murder, according to jail records. The U.S Border Patrol also placed a no-bail hold on the Pocket area neighborhood woman.
She is scheduled to appear in Department 61 of Sacramento Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said they received a call at 1:19 a.m. Sunday from a father asking for a welfare check on his two children, a 7-year-old son and the daughter. Both had been picked up from his home by their mother, his estranged wife, police said.
At 1:50 a.m., the father called back and said he believed his wife may have killed their daughter.
When police arrived at the mother's apartment on the 7300 block of Greenhaven Drive, they found the child, who was unresponsive. An officer began CPR until medical personnel arrived.
The girl was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The boy was unharmed, police said. He was not placed in protective custody, but it was unclear late Sunday whether he had been reunited with his father, said police spokesman Konrad von Schoech.
Investigators were still trying to determine a motive, von Schoech said. He said police had been called to the Greenhaven Drive apartment earlier this year, but would not say for what.
Ram, at Sacramento County jail, declined interview requests. Ram's estranged husband could not be reached.
