Sacto 9-1-1

From Denny Walsh

A 14-year-old was booked into Juvenile Hall Saturday on charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon after he was detained Friday night at the scene of an officer-involved shooting in the Foothill Farms area.

After questioning the teenager, sheriff's detectives said, they became convinced he was involved in the robbery of a convenience store clerk that preceded the shooting.

Responding at 10 p.m. Friday to a report of an assault on the clerk, sheriff's deputies captured two subjects a short distance from the store, which is at Madison and Garfield avenues. With the pair detained in the back of a patrol car, one of the deputies pursued a third subject on foot.

He caught up with the 18-year-old and the two engaged in a fight behind a fourplex on the 5100 block of Connecticut Drive. The deputy, whose name was not released, fired multiple shots at the subject, who was hit at least once in the torso. He was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive, according to a Sheriff's Department press release.

The 14-year-old was detained at the scene of the shooting when additional deputies arrived. After the trio of detained subjects were questioned, the teenager was arrested and the other two were released. When the man who was shot is deemed fit for incarceration, he will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on felony charges of resisting an officer by means of threats or violence and robbery, the release said. An unidentified suspect in the convenience store robbery is being sought. He is described by witnesses only as a young black male, the Sheriff's press release said.

Sheriff's officials said the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave while homicide and internal affairs detectives and the district attorney's office investigate the incident, in accord with department policies. The officer is 45 and has been with the department 15 years.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the robbery is urged to call sheriff's detectives at (916) 874-5115, or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP, or send a tip by text messaging 274637 (CRIMES) then enter SACTIP followed by the information. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
