From Sandy Louey:

Redding police are investigating a hit-and-run incident in which a car hit a power pole Monday night.

At 11:56 p.m., officers were called to Rancho Road at Alta Mesa Drive. A 1999 VW Jetta traveling south on Alta Mesa failed to stop or negotiate a turn upon reaching the T-intersection with Rancho, according to a news release from the Redding Police Department.

The car hit and snapped off an AT&T power pole as well as a mail box in front of a home. The Jetta, which had major damage, was abandoned. Redding Electric Utility and AT&T workers arrived on scene to replace the damaged power pole, police said.

From Sandy Louey:

Elk Grove police arrested a 21-year-old Sacramento man in connection with a hit-and-run accident Monday.

The incident was at 4:04 p.m. at Elk Grove Florin Road and Williamson Drive. Ricco Thomas was involved in a collision and fled the scene in his vehicle, according to an Elk Grove police report.

Thomas eventually parked his vehicle a few blocks away and got out with his 6-month-old child, police said.

He then began jumping over fences with his child, police said. Officers said they detained Thomas, who they said was identified as the driver in the hit and run.

A records check revealed Thomas had an outstanding felony warrant, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run with injury, endangering the health of a child and the warrant, police said.

He was being held Tuesday on $20,000 bail, according to online records with the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Police said the child was released to the mother. The injuries in the collision were minor.

From Sandy Louey:

Redding police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run accident that injured three people.

The incident took place at 6:16 p.m. Thursday at Cypress Avenue and Oxford Road. A Dodge Stratus headed east on Cypress made a left turn, colliding with a Buick Skylark traveling west on Cypress, according to a news release from the Redding Police Department.

The male driver of the Dodge fled the scene, parking the vehicle near Regal and Hartnell avenues before leaving on foot, police said.

The driver and two passengers in the Buick Skylark suffered minor injuries.

Shortly after the accident, a vehicle was reported stolen from the 2200 block of Oxford Road. Officers went there and found Raymond Rawls II hiding in the bathroom of his home, authorities said.

He told officers that he had been driving the vehicle at the time of the collision. He told his wife to call it in as stolen, police said.

Rawls was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run causing injury, driving on a suspended license and on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. He was booked into the Shasta County jail.

From Sandy Louey:

Redding police arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection to a hit-and-run accident involving a parked vehicle.

At 12:59 a.m. Saturday, police were called out to a collision near the intersection of West Street and 9th Street.

Witnesses saw three people leaving a red 2007 Ford Mustang, which had struck a parked vehicle. Shortly afterwards, an 18-year-old Redding man attempted to report the Mustang as stolen, according to a press release from the Redding Police Department.

The driver was identified as a 15-year-old boy, while the two passengers were a boy and girl, both 16. The passengers, who had minor injuries, declined medical attention and were released to their parents.

The 15-year-old driver was traveling northeast on 9th Street and attempted to turn left onto northwest West Street. Because he was speeding, he was unable to negotiate the turn and struck the parked vehicle, police said.

The driver, who was located at a nearby home, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and driving without a license. He didn't require medical attention for his injuries and was booked at the Shasta County Juvenile Hall, police said.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.

From Sandy Louey:

From Sandy Louey:

A 52-year-old Folsom woman was found guilty Tuesday in the hit-and-run death of a 15-year-old Granite Bay teenager who was walking on the side of Auburn Folsom Road.

Prosecutor Jeff Wilson said a Placer County jury found Anna Elvira Berset guilty on the charges of hit-and-run driving causing death and vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

Berset could face up to four years for the conviction. She is scheduled to be sentenced March 24, Wilson said.

Courtney Parker, a Granite Bay High School student and former cheerleader, was killed in the June 13, 2007 incident.

Wilson said he hoped the guilty verdict in the case will help the Parker family.

"I was glad to see they got the justice they deserved," he said.

Parker was with a group of girls at a fast-food restaurant on the night of the accident. The girls had left the restaurant, but she turned around to get the cell phone she had forgotten.

A vehicle struck her as she walked on the side of Auburn-Folsom Road near Douglas Boulevard in Granite Bay. One of her friends found her on the side of the road.

A California Highway Patrol officer had testified during Berset's preliminary hearing that Berset called June 14 to report she had hit something on Auburn Folsom Road the previous night, but that it might have been a trash can or deer or perhaps a rock thrown at her by kids.

Officers who went to her home found damage to the hood, headlight and windshield of her 2002 Toyota RAV4.

Berset's son, Joshua Sanguinetti, spent four years in prison for a fatal-and-run in 1999 on Auburn Folsom Road.

From Stan Oklobdzija:

The California Highway Patrol has submitted findings in a hit-and-run case against a Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office last year, which has not yet filed charges, district attorney and CHP officials said Wednesday.

On Oct. 30, sheriff's deputy David Smolich allegedly hit a motorist on his sheriff's department motorcycle on southbound Highway 99 near Mack Road, said Officer Michael Bradley, CHP spokesman.

The CHP concluded their investigation in early November, Bradley said, and submitted their findings to the District Attorney for possible prosecution, he said. A DA spokeswoman said she could not immediately determine the status of the case.

Smolich has not been charged with any crime, according to court records.

From Andy Furillo:

A memorial fund has been set up for the family of Aman Kumar Khanna, the Sacramento man who worked two jobs to provide for his family before he was killed in an Oct. 10 hit-and-run collision.

Contributions can be sent to the Aman Kumar Khanna Memorial Fund at the Golden One Credit Union, Post Office Box 15249, Sacramento, 95851-0249.

Khanna, 58, who held down two security guard jobs, was the sole means of support for his wife, three children and his mother.

Khanna was killed by a teenager who drove under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

The youth pleaded guilty last week to gross vehicular manslaughter and other charges. He was sentenced to a year in the Sacramento County Boy's Ranch as a result of his straight-up plea to the charges in Juvenile Court.

He will be deported to Mexico upon his release.

From Andy Furillo:

A 17-year-old boy has admitted to gross vehicular manslaughter charges in Sacramento Juvenile Court in the hit-and-run death of a 58-year-old man, prosecutors said today.

The Oct. 10 collision killed Aman Khanna, who was on his way to work in one of two jobs he held.

The youth, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was under the influence of alcohol and was driving 80 miles per hour when he ran and red light and struck Khanna at the intersection of Cottage and Fulton, according to the Sacramento district attorney's office.

Khanna supported his mother, wife and three daughters.

Deputy District Attorney Joy Smiley said in a press release that his death left his family in "severe emotional and financial distress." Smiley said the family's "finances have been depleted" and that his passing left them "with no way to support themselves."

The teenaged defendant will be committed to the Sacramento County Boys Ranch for one year and then will be deported to Mexico upon his release, prosecutors said.

From Sandy Louey:

A 34-year-old West Sacramento woman who allegedly was involved in a hit-and-run accident that injured two people has turned herself into authorities.

Jennifer Moran was booked Saturday at the Yolo County jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run charges, according to a release from the West Sacramento Police Department.

The accident occurred at 9:40 p.m. Friday when two female pedestrians, ages 17 and 19, were walking on the south side of Sacramento Avenue near Douglas Street when they were struck by a pickup truck, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck didn't stop to check on the pair, police said.

On Saturday, the 17-year-old was on life support, while the 19-year-old had severe injuries, according to police.

Police are investigating the accident, but say alcohol may have been a factor. Officers located the pickup involved in the accident a few blocks from Moran's home. The pickup had moderate front-end damage, they said.

From Niesha Lofing:

A Sacramento man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcyclist in Fair Oaks two weeks ago.

California Highway Patrol investigators on Thursday arrested William Roger Lyon, 54, for allegedly hitting a motorcyclist on Madison Avenue and failing to stop, CHP Officer Lizz Dutton said.

Michael Winnett, 46, of Sacramento, was riding his 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan west on Madison near Lincoln Oaks Drive at 8:35 p.m. Aug. 24 when he was hit by a 1991 Hyundai Elantra turning onto Madison, she said.

Winnett was thrown from the motorcycle and later died at Mercy San Juan Medical Center.

The Hyundai's driver ran away from the collision, Dutton said.

CHP officers began investigating the crash. Lyons was asked to call the CHP and he spoke with investigators, but refused to give his location or a statement, she said.

The officers determined that Lyons was staying with family and set up surveillance. While watching the home, they saw Lyons leave and get into the driver's seat of a brown Dodge Aspen. They followed Lyons to his home in Sacramento, called for back-up officers and conducted a felony traffic stop, Dutton said.

Lyons was arrested without incident.

He admitted to being the driver of the Hyundai and said he was alone in the car when the crash occurred, she said.

"He stated he didn't want to go back to prison," Dutton said.

Lyons was on bail for an unrelated case in Placer County at the time of the crash.

Lyons was arrested on suspicion of felony manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, violating probation, driving on a suspended driver's license and an enhancement for an offense committed while on bail.

He is being held on $130,000 bail in Sacramento County Main Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to online jail information.

From David Richie:

The California Highway Patrol is seeking the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision Sunday night at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Lincoln Oaks Drive in Fair Oaks.

The incident occurred about 8:35 p.m. as Michael Winnett, 46, of Citrus Heights, rode his 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan westbound on Madison Avenue. An as-yet unidentified driver in a 1991 Hyundai Elantra pulled out to make a left-hand turn on to Madison Avenue and evidently failed to see the approaching motorcycle, said Officer Lizz Dutton, CHP spokeswoman.

The Hyundai struck the motorcycle and Winnett was thrown about 30 feet. At that point the driver of the Hyundai jumped out of the vehicle and ran from the scene, Dutton said.

Winnett was wearing a helmet but suffered extensive injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Carmichael, where he died approximately 26 hours after the collision.

CHP investigators would like to talk to anybody who witnessed the collision or saw the driver of the Hyundai fleeing the scene. Witnesses can call the CHP North Area office at (916) 338-6710.

From Sandy Louey:

The California Highway Patrol seeks the public's assistance in finding the driver and vehicle involved in a fatal injury hit-and-run crash at about 6:20 p.m. April 12 on westbound Highway 50 east of Greenstone Road in the Placerville area.

According to a CHP news release, the vehicle is described as a small white compact, possibly a Honda Civic or Mitsubishi Diamante, with wheels painted black. The vehicle should have damage to the left front quarter panel and/or the left side, and damage to the right front corner.

There were reports that the vehicle was being driven at high speeds before and after the crash. The vehicle was last seen entering a housing community off Shingle Springs Drive, the CHP reports.

CHP officials request that people with any information about the collision, or who have seen a vehicle fitting this description, contact the Placerville Office of the CHP at (530) 622-1110.
