Seven teams entered Week 8 Friday night with undefeated records.
Only four are still standing.
No. 1 Granite Bay, No. 4 Nevada Union and No. 5 Del Campo all suffered their first losses.
No. 13 Roseville outlasted host Granite Bay 35-34, ending the Grizzlies' 14-game win streak; No. 15 Rio Americano recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter to toppled Del Campo 24-20 in Fair Oaks while Nevada Union's Wing-T couldn't get anything going on a muddy Elk Grove High School field in falling 13-7 to No. 9 Laguna Creek. It was the Cardinals' first win in nine tries against the Miners.
But that wasn't the end to Friday's surprises.
For those still harboring some doubts about No. 16 Woodcreek, a team that didn't win a game last year, the Timberwolves answered in a big way by stopping No. 20 Del Oro 24-21 in Loomis, handing the Golden Eagles a hard-to-believe sixth loss this season and keeping them winless in the Sierra Foothill League.
Dixon, a team that hasn't competed for a league title in quite awhile, is now alone atop the Capital Valley Conference standings and has secured its first playoff berth since joining the league after beating Rio Linda 14-6 on the road.
Which leads to this not particularly insightful point: That's why they play the games.
