Keep up with what's happening on the field and behind the scenes in the world of Sacramento-area high school sports.

What started as a promising season is ending among crutches, gauze and bandages for the El Dorado High School football team.

The Cougars (4-5, 2-3) are at No. 14 Bear River (7-2, 4-1) tonight and still have a chance to make the postseason. But it would take too many scenarios for Cougars coach Rick Redding to believe it can realistically happen.

Last Friday's 42-21 loss to Mesa Verde was a back breaker.

"We've just had a lot of season-ending injuries in crucial positions," El Dorado coach Rick Redding said. "We've been moving guys around."

Quarterback Joe Earnshaw was lost to a separated throwing shoulder; running back-linebacker Jordan Williams broke his right leg, which included a severed tendon - "it's one of the worst football-related injuries I've seen," Redding said; and sophomore running back A.J. Darr injured his shoulder.

Several other players were banged up and another key running back is unlikely to play tonight for disciplinary reasons.

"Whatever could go wrong, seemed to go wrong this season," Redding said.
