Sac State football scholarships

Question: How many football scholarships does Sacramento State have to offer in football?

- Tony Matos, San Jose

Answer: We are told that the Hornets have 15 scholarships to give this season. As of today, they have signed 12 players. Among the locals who have signed with Sac State are defensive back Ricky Thompson from Grant, running back Bryan Hilliard of Laguna Creek, offensive lineman Kevin Youtsey of Lincoln, linebacker-defensive end Zack Nash of Vacaville; linebacker/safety Matt Evans from Sacramento City College and Jesuit; and defensive lineman John Green from Fresno City College and Burbank.

Sacramento Adventist is a hoops surprise

Question: I've seen one big surprise this year. Sacramento Adventist Academy is ranked No. 2 in the latest Division V power ratings, ahead of powerhouse Capital Christian. Should I know about these guys? Are they good? Why or why not?
- Greg, Sacramento

Answer: One can't help root for a school that has only 122 students. Sacramento Adventist is a true Cinderella story with a handful of players who could hold there own in many of the area's large-school programs. But when the section's Division V championship is held at Arco Arena, I expect Modesto Christian and Capital Christian to be the two finalists for the fifth straight year.
