Body Text Playing for the Kings isn't what it used to=20 be.

The playoff streak, of course, was stopped at = eight=20 consecutive seasons last April. And with three coaches in = the past=20 three seasons, the Kings can't exactly boast about stability = to=20 players considering coming to = Sacramento.

Nonetheless, the=20 competition for roster spots might be more intense than = ever. Only=20 nine players have guaranteed contracts for next season, = giving free=20 agents and summer-league standouts a chance to make the=20 roster.

But the Kings' roster retooling appears to = include an=20 attempt to bring a former player back via = trade.

According to=20 a league source, the = Kings=20 recently contacted Orlando about Hedo Turkoglu. The small = forward,=20 entering his eighth season, began his career in Sacramento = in 2000=20 and was part of a three-team trade in 2003 that sent him to = San=20 Antonio.

The source would=20 not go on record for fear of repercussion.

The most = likely=20 King to be offered in a deal would be small forward Ron = Artest,=20 whose $7.8 million salary for the 2007-08 campaign is close = enough=20 to Turkoglu's $6.3 million salary to fall within the = parameters of=20 the collective bargaining agreement. Turkoglu has two = seasons=20 remaining on his contract and a player option for a third, = while=20 Artest has two seasons left on his deal but holds an early=20 termination option for next summer. Kings basketball = president Geoff=20 Petrie did not return a call seeking comment.

As for=20 potential lower-level additions, the Kings released their = Las Vegas=20 summer-league roster Tuesday. The group is headlined by = third-year=20 swingman Francisco Garcia, second-year guard Quincy Douby = and 2007=20 first-round draft pick Spencer Hawes, a center from the = University=20 of Washington.

Among the four former Kings who became = free=20 agents July 1, big man Justin Williams is the only one on = the=20 summer-league roster. Noticeably absent is third-year guard = Ronnie=20 Price, who -- like Williams -- became a free agent but has = been=20 given a qualifying offer from the Kings that in no way = guarantees a=20 return. The Kings can rescind the offer, but it gives them = the right=20 of first refusal should another team make an=20 offer.

Meanwhile, point guard Pooh Jeter returns for = his=20 second summer stint with the Kings and could have a chance = to make=20 the roster. Jeter, a 5-foot-11 University of Portland = product who=20 was cut during the Kings' training camp last year, played = well=20 enough in the NBA Development League last season to start in = the=20 All-Star Game. Artest's brother, Daniel, who has played in = community=20 college and overseas, is also on the Kings' summer = roster.

As=20 for the free-agent front, Petrie said Monday he has had "a=20 preliminary conversation" with Corliss Williamson's agent, = Jimmy=20 Sexton. The former Kings forward said during the 2006-07 = season he=20 believes he has six seasons left. Williamson, 33, made $6.5 = million=20 last season and had said he would seek a three-year deal = this time=20 around. Petrie said no offer has been made.

"He's a = guy that=20 everybody likes around here," Petrie said. "We'll continue = to stay=20 in touch with Jimmy and see at some point where we're at and = what=20 we're trying to do or what we may be able to do or get done = that=20 still fits for him and fits for us."

It has also = become=20 official that point guard Mike Bibby is, for now, on the = Kings'=20 payroll for next season. Bibby did not exercise his early=20 termination option for the 2007-08 campaign by the June 30 = deadline,=20 meaning he remains a King and will earn $13.5 million next = season.=20

Bibby has a player option after the 2007-08 season, = giving=20 him the chance to become an unrestricted free agent next = summer and=20 turn down the final year of his deal worth $14.5=20 million.

Tuesday afternoon, the Kings released former = assistant coaches Scott Brooks, Brendan O'Connor, Mark = Hughes and=20 Clay Moser.

Jason Hamm was the only assistant coach = not=20 released.
