Bee staff writer Melody Gutierrez grew up in Twentynine Palms. At 14-years-old, she decided to combine her two passions -- sports and writing -- when she became a special assignments reporter for the Desert Trail, her hometown weekly newspaper. Melody headed to Northern California in 2000 to attend Chico State and has remained in the region ever since. She earned an internship with The Bee and subsequently became a staff writer in 2004 and has covered virtually every sport, starting with high schools, up through college and then the pros. Melody took over coverage of the Monarchs last season and chronicled the team's pursuit of a second straight league championship -- a quest that fell just short.
Melody welcomes your questions and will answer as many as she can as the season progresses.
After Rebekkah Brunson's arrest Thursday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, a Monarchs three-part video blog showing the 25-year-old behind the wheel takes on new meaning. In it, Brunson shows off her 2007 white Corvette and talks about everything from cars to fashion. In the first minute of the video blog, Brunson mentions how she hopes she won't get "too many speeding tickets."
The two-door Corvette she is driving in the video is the same vehicle she was driving when pulled over just before 2 a.m. Thursday on 11th and I streets in Sacramento. The Monarchs All-Star forward was arrested and booked into Sacramento County jail. She was later released on bail.
"I would like to apologize to the Sacramento Monarchs organization, the Sacramento Monarchs fans and the Sacramento community," Brunson said in a statement released by the team.
