Monarchs Blog and Q&A

Melody Gutierrez

Bee staff writer Melody Gutierrez grew up in Twentynine Palms. At 14-years-old, she decided to combine her two passions -- sports and writing -- when she became a special assignments reporter for the Desert Trail, her hometown weekly newspaper. Melody headed to Northern California in 2000 to attend Chico State and has remained in the region ever since. She earned an internship with The Bee and subsequently became a staff writer in 2004 and has covered virtually every sport, starting with high schools, up through college and then the pros. Melody took over coverage of the Monarchs last season and chronicled the team's pursuit of a second straight league championship -- a quest that fell just short.

Melody welcomes your questions and will answer as many as she can as the season progresses.

Griffith out for tonight's game

Monarchs veteran Yolanda Griffith has been placed on the inactive list with a
strained clavicle and will not play in tonight's 7 p.m. game against Chicago
at Arco Arena.

Griffith originally injured her neck in Tuesday's 59-46 win over New York at
Arco Arena when she hit the court in the first half.

Following that game, Griffith said the pain felt similar to a 2002 injury in
which a bulging disc in her next forced her to sit out 15 games. Griffith
finished that game and played 20 minutes in a loss to Los Angeles on
Wednesday.

It is unclear why she will sit out tonight's game and whether the injury has
been further exasperated. The Monarchs did not practice Thursday.

As of 20 minutes before tonight's tipoff, Monarchs coach Jenny Boucek had
not turned in her starting roster, telling team officials she was unsure who
would start at center in Griffith's place.
