Four Furloughs Unfathomable

The following statement is a response from Nancy Swindell, President AFSCME 2620, concerning Gov. Schwarzenegger’s latest plan to cut state services by 20%:

“I understand Hollywood actors are drawn to drama, but Schwarzenegger’s absurd furlough plan will produce a real-life horror picture that no Californian could stand to watch. Slashing critical services that reduce the spread of contagious diseases, keep children safe in child care facilities and prevent dangerous criminals from walking the streets will transform the Golden State into an unlivable third-world country.”

“Threatening to cut state services by 20% may produce sensational headlines, but the results would be repugnant.”

AFSCME 2620 represents nearly 5,000 highly trained, educated professionals working in the mental health, healthcare and social services fields. AFSCME 2620 members provide a range of state services including adoption placement, psychological treatment, day care and senior care home inspections, and vocational rehabilitation counseling that helps disabled Californians find successful employment.
