CALPERS HONORED WITH SILVER AWARD IN THE 2009 CALIFORNIA FIT BUSINESS AWARDS

I am pleased to announce that CalPERS is a Silver Award recipient of the 2009 California Fit Business Award, thanks in large part to the efforts and enthusiasm of our Wellness Committee and our robust Wellness Program, Wellness Works.

The award recognizes private and non-profit companies and agencies across California that promote a healthier workplace.

Some CalPERS examples cited in our application for the 2009 Fit Business Award include:

·        Onsite Fitness Center and Group Exercise classes

·        Nutrition 101 class

·        Wellness campaigns such as the recent Win With Wellness

·        Active Wellness Committee

This year more than 70 companies across the State applied for this award. This included a mix of public and private sector companies, small local companies, and California offices of national companies. Winners are selected based on the depth of their health and wellness programs, the quality and focus of their policies, the involvement of their leadership, the impact of their endeavors, and the reasons given for having wellness programs.

“The California Fit Business winners exemplify a true commitment to a healthy and productive workforce,” says Jim Carman, Employee Wellness Consultant for Kaiser Permanente. “They’re models for employers of all sizes and it serves them well from a business bottom-line to support the overall wellness of their employees.”

The CalPERS Wellness Committee, made up of representatives from each division, in partnership with the Wellness Program, applied for this prestigious award last June.

The award ceremony will take place on November 5th.

I’d like to thank each and every one of you for your continued commitment to improving or maintaining a healthy lifestyle and helping us to showcase our award-winning Wellness Program to our government and private industry peers.
