Sentimental SAGs

The SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards are almost a copycat of the Golden Globes because they honor both movies and television. The difference is, the awards are voted on by members of the guild. You know, one actor to another.

And, the stars, while obviously there for the viewing public via the red carpet, are in a different element, sitting mostly at elementary school-type cafeteria tables, their milk replaced by expensive champagne and wine.

I personally like this show because, well, there really are no pretenses. And so, I've deviated from 21Q's usual M-F "coverage" to share my thoughts on tonight's fashions, which covered the spectrum from pantsuits to multiple strapless looks.

But, without a doubt, actress Helen Mirren (shown above) stood out for her fashion sense and graciousness. She truly is royalty, so to speak.

I also liked Kyra Sedgwick and a lovely Anne Hathaway, who presented a Life Achievement Award to her "Princess Diaries" co-star Julie Andrews. I shed a tear during the "Sound of Music" recognition.

Nominee Cate Blanchett was stunnining, as was winner Jennifer Hudson, who might just be getting overwhelmed with all the adulation. America Ferrera won for "Ugly Betty," and looked anything but. This young lady knows how to deliver a fabulous acceptance speech.

Meanwhile, a couple of stars were, literally, coming out of their dresses, although I suppose they can get away with it on this night. But come Oscar time, ladies, you'll need to find some double-sided tape.
