Flipping out

PINK-SLIDE.jpg I totally have been in love with flip flops since I was a kid. My grandmother used to buy them for me (a pair a month, or until the straps broke) when she took me to "town" and Woolworth's.

She was always impatient because I had a tough time picking a color. Back then (a hundred years ago!), flip flops were one style - flat with a white bottom and colored straps. It was a big decision!

I still love them, but a bout last summer with plantar fasciitis made me rethink the style of flip flops that I was wearing. I have high arches, and the flat ones were "foot flops."

Even the American Podiatric Medical Association is toes down on flip flops. But, because they're relatively inexpensive, are nice on a hot day and you can walk through the sprinklers while wearing 'em, I figured there had to be a pair that wouldn't wreck my feet.

I checked out Fleet Feet and Swanberg's on J Street and J.Crew in the Downtown Plaza. Each of these stores had either sporty or fashionable styles with enough arch support for at least a couple of hours.

Another brand that's super comfy - and totally stylish - are the Bonjour Fleurette flip flops, which actually look more like dress shoes than their casual cousins. To order online, or for a list of local retailers, click here.
