Meyer's Picks

Each week in Friday's Weekend Ticket, I review new movies and also list recommendations for films that already have been released . Now, you can find this feature each Thursday afternoon here at 21Q.

Here are my recommendations:

Becoming Jane
3 stars
This engaging film positions Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) as the heroine of a very Austen-like story. Hathaway radiates intelligence as Austen, and James McAvoy lends roguish charm to the Irishman who romances her.
Rated PG

Hairspray
3 1/2 stars
John Travolta never disappears into the role of Edna, mother to dance-crazy teen Tracy (Nikki Blonsky). Quite the contrary. He draws more attention than cotillard.jpg
he should to his performance by stretching his o’s in a Southern-style accent and adopting a would-be coy demeanor that seems more Teamster than debutante. Yet his performance, though always a curio, is completely ingratiating, because Travolta emanates such delight at being able to put on a show.
Rated PG

La Vie en Rose
2 1/2 stars
Starting Friday, Davis’ Varsity Theatre will offer another chance to catch Marion Cotillard’s (pictured, at right) spectacular turn as Edith Piaf. The film’s all over the place, but Cotillard fully embodies the late, ill-starred and supremely talented French singer.
Rated PG-13
