Teenage holiday wish list

Published: Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 10J

As if it were a secret that teenagers are hard to shop for.

More often than not, they don't even know what they want.

This year is no different. If anything, it's a little more challenging, with no obvious hot item.

There is nothing that young people are particularly clamoring for, like the iPod of yesteryear. OK, there is the iPhone, but who is going to drop that much money on someone? Or help pay the subsequent AT&T bill?

So hear it from them, this tricky demographic.

These are just some of the Teen Style contributors who were questioned, but they had the same thing to say: Get a gift card.

And no one would ever question an envelope with a $20 bill stuffed in it.

Rebecca Scolnick, Folsom High School

What do you want for Christmas? "We are so hard to shop for because we don't even know what we want. When you are a little kid, someone can just pick out a toy for you. Right now, I just wish my grandparents would give me money. But I guess I'll be asking for movies, and I'm a coat and sweater fiend."

What would you buy someone your age? "Any kind of gift card would be cool, like an iTunes gift card. That way, they get to pick it out. I love movies and DVDs, and so do a lot of people. So that's not a bad gift. But really, I'd go with gift cards unless I knew what the person wanted."

Rachel Robins, Rocklin High School

What do you want for Christmas? "Usually, I just want gift cards or money, or maybe a book. I guess I would kind of like an iHome for my iPod when I move into the dorms next year. But I don't really know what I want."

What would you get for someone your age?: "That's so hard because trends and opinions change so much. You can buy something for someone, and next week it's not cool or in style anymore. But if it were a girl, I guess I'd go with something simple like a shirt or a cool sweater, and if it's a guy, I'd probably get them music, like a CD or an iTunes gift card."

Scott Newman, El Camino High School

What do you want for Christmas? "I want a bunch of soccer stuff, like soccer jerseys from European teams and CDs like AC/DC, Nickelback and Coldplay. If I had a dream gift, I would really like a Taylor Guitar."

What would you get for someone your age: "It totally depends. Some people want video games, and then some people want nothing to do with video games and maybe they like sports. There really is no safe gift, but the best bet there is is the iTunes gift card. Everyone likes music, but you might not know what kind. It lets them pick."

What You Should Know About Comments on Sacbee.com

Sacbee.com is happy to provide a forum for reader interaction, discussion, feedback and reaction to our stories. However, we reserve the right to delete inappropriate comments or ban users who can't play nice. (See our full terms of service here.)

Here are some rules of the road:

• Keep your comments civil. Don't insult one another or the subjects of our articles. If you think a comment violates our guidelines click the "report abuse" button to notify the moderators. Responding to the comment will only encourage bad behavior.

• Don't use profanities, vulgarities or hate speech. This is a general interest news site. Sometimes, there are children present. Don't say anything in a way you wouldn't want your own child to hear.

• Do not attack other users; focus your comments on issues, not individuals.

• Stay on topic. Only post comments relevant to the article at hand. If you want to discuss an issue with a specific user, click on his profile name and send him a direct message.

• Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.

You should also know that The Sacramento Bee does not screen comments before they are posted. You are more likely to see inappropriate comments before our staff does, so we ask that you click the "report abuse" button to submit those comments for moderator review. You also may notify us via email at feedback@sacbee.com. Note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us the profile name of the user who made the comment. Remember, comment moderation is subjective. You may find some material objectionable that we won't and vice versa.

If you submit a comment, the user name of your account will appear along with it. Users cannot remove their own comments once they have submitted them, but you may ask our staff to retract one of your comments by sending an email to feedback@sacbee.com. Again, make sure you note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us your profile name.
