A new open-space park is set to open Thursday morning north of Cache Creek in Yolo County.
The 41-acre Capay Open Space Park is located on County Road 95 and features more than two miles of walking trails, picnic tables, paved parking lots, public restrooms and future ramp access to Cache Creek, states a county news release.
The park has undergone extensive habitat restoration and is home to more than 40 types of vegetation and wildlife native to California.
The land was donated to the county by Granite Construction four years ago. The company operates a gravel quarry near the park, the release states.
Construction and restoration costs were funded through voter-approved state propositions that fund river parkway, recreation and habitat restoration projects. Local gravel producers supporting the Cache Creek Resource Management Plan also helped fund the park project, the release states.
"The universally accessible creekside trails at Capay Open Space Park will provide the public with opportunities for nature study, wildlife viewing, hiking and direct access to the waters of Cache Creek," Dimitrios Georges, the county's park planner, stated in the news release. "Additional habitat restoration work this winter will continue the process of restoring the riparian and oak woodland habitat that once dominated the floor of the Sacramento Valley."
