WEST SACRAMENTO Fluoridation of the city's water has been delayed a week.
The city will begin fluoridation on Monday and expects to be at optimum levels by May 26, said Dan Mount, city water services superintendent.
The fluoridation was supposed to start Tuesday but was delayed because of an electronic gauge malfunction. The gauge, a backup level indicator, tells officials when fluoride tanks are full during a delivery.
"The problem was resolved within 24 hours, but to stay on the cautious side, we delayed the initial fluoride delivery so the system could be tested," Mount wrote in an e-mail to The Bee.
Residents' water bills will not rise as a result of the fluoridation, the city says.
California communities with populations of more than 10,000 are required by state law to fluoridate their drinking water supplies if funding allows.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in most water supplies, but some municipalities, such as West Sacramento, add fluoride to adjust the concentration to optimal levels determined by the state Department of Public Health.
