Is crime down in Rancho Cordova? Police department releases new statistics

Police tape at crime scene

The number of violent incidents increased in Rancho Cordova in 2025 as property crimes lowered, according to new statistics from the Rancho Cordova Police Department released in March.

One death was counted as a homicide in Rancho Cordova in 2025, compared to 4 in 2024. According to the department’s report, all statistics were based on the National Incident-Based Reporting System, used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to report crime data to the Department of Justice.

Ed Igoe, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office which provides services to the Rancho Cordova Police Department, said the case was referring to 16-year-old Michael Berry, who was fatally stabbed by a Sacramento Regional Transit ambassador in June 2025.

Deputies previously said the RT ambassador, who was not identified to the public, told Berry and a teenage girl to stop vaping on a bus. After the teens got off the bus at the Mather Field/Mills Transit Center on Mills Station Road, a physical altercation ensued and the ambassador stabbed Berry during the struggle. Berry later died at a hospital.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office decided not to prosecute the RT employee in November after an investigation concluded there was insufficient evidence to support criminal charges.

There were 23 rapes reported in 2025, compared to 27 in 2024, and 298 aggravated assaults, up from 252 in 2024. The city saw 88 robbery cases in 2025, up from 66 in 2024. Overall crimes against people were up, with 410 cases in 2025 and 349 in 2024.

Rancho Cordova also had 229 burglaries in 2025, down from 240 burglaries in 2024. There were 851 larceny cases in 2025, down from 1,071 cases in 2024. One hundred forty-two vehicles were reported stolen in 2025, down from 267 in 2024. There were 17 cases of arson, up from 12 in 2024. Overall property crime was down, with 1239 cases in 2025 compared to 1590 in 2024.

Police arrested 143 people for suspicion of DUI, up from 113 in 2024.

The department received a total of 54,082 calls for service in 2025, compared to 55,254 in 2024.

There were also 362 instances of mail theft in 2025, according to the presentation and to the United States Postal Inspection Service. There were 17 arrests or warrants issued in connection to mail theft in Rancho Cordova in 2025.

To address mail theft, local leaders in March announced the formation of the Sacramento Mail Theft Task Force, calling it a coordinated effort among the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the Rancho Cordova Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service and its Postal Inspection Service.

Sacramento County ranked among the hardest-hit areas in the nation for mail theft, District Attorney Thien Ho said, particularly in Rancho Cordova, Folsom and the Natomas neighborhoods of Sacramento.

From January 2025 to February, the District Attorney’s Office received more than 300 mail theft cases and prosecuted about 80%, Ho said. People convicted of felony mail theft could face up to three years in state prison, with longer sentences possible for those with prior criminal histories.
