At its outset, this subversive piece of local video art looks like a tourism infomercial circa the 1980s. Its title card employs neon script similar to that in 1983’s “Valley Girl,” and its smooth jazz soundtrack underscores a cheery narrator describing Sacramento’s scenery.
But hold that hotel booking– this is “The Sacramentomb Valley,” a creepy yet poignant short video by Serene Lusano and Devon McMindes that muses on haves and have-nots in the Capital City.
The narrator brings to mind an anthropologist reporting on an ancient Mesoamerican civilization, but in this case it’s Sacramento, with its downtown office buildings likened to “skytombs,” and the Ziggurat building in West Sacramento a burial complex.
