6 unique events in Sacramento this weekend: Food fest, memorial service, hip hop and books

Celebrate the end of this week’s record-breaking heat wave with a Louisiana food festival, live music or a free exhibit in Sacramento.

Friday will continue to be hot, with a high of 110, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento. Saturday and Sunday highs are expected to be in the upper 80s and low 90s.

Here’s what you can look for on Sept. 9 to Sept. 11:

FRIDAY

Dance the night away

705 K Street, Sacramento

The Nightingale Block Party will showcase dance music from more than a dozen artists in Ali Youssefi Square, according to the online music magazine Resident Advisor.

On Friday, the block party is from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Saturday, the event will go from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. You have to be 21 or older to attend.

General admission tickets are $20. VIP tickets are $50, and offer entry into dance parties inside Darling Aviary bar and grill, and Irish pub Malt & Mash.

Gather quilting ideas

2417 Cormorant Way, Sacramento

Meissner Sewing & Vacuum Centers and Sacramento’s Modern Quilt Guild are hosting the Global Quilt Exhibition in celebration of quilt month. The exhibit will be open on Friday, Saturday and six more times this month, according to Sacramento 365’s website.

The exhibition features portraits of Oprah, Joan of Arc and more. It showcases today’s best modern quilters. It’s free to attend.

SATURDAY

Get a free book for Hispanic Heritage Month

2814 35th Street, Sacramento

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Underground Books will give free books to a limited number of guests at the Let’s Read Oak Park celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The store will only be able to accommodate a dozen registered attendees. You can register on Eventbrite or the Underground Book’s website. This is a free event for children ages 5 to 12, according to the bookstore’s website.

The event is meant to encourage children to read with their families. Children will be given activities with an emphasis on cultural themes and interactive book readings.

Go to the park for authentic Louisiana food

2115 6th St, Sacramento

Louisiana Sue will host a Crawfish and Catfish Festival in Sacramento’s Southside Park this Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The two-day event will feature a car show and kids zone, live music, crawfish races and more. No pets are allowed, according to the event page on the Bamm! ticket website.

People can bring an empty ice chest for to-go food like jambalaya, gumbo, frog legs and alligator.

General admission tickets are $20 and $25 at the gate, according to the ticket website.

Parking is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 500 R St. Garage, and the 1801 Third St. lot.

SUNDAY

Attend Cal Expo’s 9/11 Memorial

1600 Exposition Blvd, Sacramento

Cal Expo will open its Memorial Plaza ceremony in observance of the 21st anniversary of 9/11. The event is free to the public and runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Military, law enforcement, and U.S. Rep. Ami Bera will attend as guest speakers. Speakers will begin at 9 a.m. Seating is first come, first served, according to the Cal Expo website.

Free parking is available in Lot B.

Enjoy a hip-hop concert

1417 R St, Sacramento

Rap and Hip Hop artist, Danileigh will perform at Ace of Spades at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, according to the venue’s website.

General admission tickets are $27.50.
