Surfers and cowboys will meet on the Pacific coast for Ventura’s 9-year tradition, the Surf Rodeo Music and Surf Festival at Pierpoint Beach. Contestants don cowboy hats as they brave the waves and ride mechanical bulls. More than 25 bands, including the English Beat, will fill two stages.

The 2015 grand prize included a fully restored 1965 Volkswagen Beetle. More than a dozen surfboards will be auctioned off, benefiting local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and the Girls Empowerment Workshop.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, and Sunday, July 17, and run throughout the day. One-day passes cost $25. Tournament entries range from $20 to $100.
