The Sacramento Public Library will hold its sixth annual Jane Austen Tea, an homage to the famed English romantic-fiction author. The event will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Austen’s fourth book, “Emma,” (from 1815).
The afternoon will begin with a silent auction, featuring Austen-inspired gift items, and a Friends of the Sacramento Public Library book sale. Next will be a catered tea service, followed by an interactive discussion about “Emma,” led by UC Davis English professor Alessa Johns. To work off lunch, join English country dancing to live music. Regency Era attire (1790 to 1820) is encouraged.
The party is set for 1:30 to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria, 828 I St., Sacramento, 916-264-2800. Tickets are $30 at www.saclibrary.org/austentea, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16.

Steven Unger partnered with New York City press photographer Arty Pomerantz for “Before the Paparazzi: 50 Years of Extraordinary Photographs.” The images chronicle a half-century of cultural and political changes in the media capital of the world, beginning in the 1950s.
Unger will address “the unique access press photographers had in the pre-digital age to go behind police and fire lines, approach presidents and heads of state and take pictures of celebrities, all by invitation rather than pursuit and harassment.”
Catch his presentation at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the University Library Gallery on the California State University, Sacramento, campus; free and open to the public. The event is part of the university’s Author Lecture Series. Get a free campus parking permit at 916-278-5954.
