The long-anticipated R-rated movie, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” opens Friday, titillatingly timed for release on the eve of Valentine’s Day.
As hot as the film is expected to be, things will heat up even more when 50 “adult romance” writers from around the nation show up in Sacramento for a book signing and private late-night screening of “Grey.”
First, back up to romancers Kimberly Knight, Erika Van Eck and K.J. Bell and their friends and colleagues, including the romance-review blog sites Kristie’s Kaptivating Reviews and Fierce and Fabulous Book Diva. They brainstormed to come up with the special event, “Love and Fifty.”
Early on, it offered a VIP package in which fans could attend a meet and greet reception for the authors and go with them to the Century Downtown Plaza theater for the screening. That and other packages have sold out. The remaining tickets are $10, for admission to an author signing, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Embassy Suites, 100 Capitol Mall, Sacramento; (916) 326-5000. The movie is described this way: “A literature student (Dakota Johnson) begins a daring affair with a controlling businessman (Jamie Dornan) whose sexual proclivities push the boundaries of pain and pleasure.”
For context: British TV executive Erika Leonard was posting online fan fiction based on characters from Stephenie Meyer’s book “Master of the Universe” when she took it to the next level. Under the pseudonym E.L. James, her fleshed-out stories about another writer’s creations took off via word-of-mouth, resulting in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” bondage trilogy.
