In what’s become her breakout comedy routine, comedian Anjelah Johnson impersonates a Vietnamese manicurist – an edgy caricature complete with phony praise and oblique criticism served with a smile and foreign-language asides.
Also in Johnson’s onstage repertoire? Bon Qui Qui, a fast-food employee who works at “King Burger” and refuses to take complicated orders, often calling security.
Born and raised in San Jose, Johnson, a former Oakland Raiders cheerleader, moved to Los Angeles in 2005 to chase a comedy career. Not long after, a video of her “Nail Salon” routine went viral, leading to a stint on MADtv (during which she introduced Bon Qui Qui).
While still not a huge name in the standup world, Johnson, who is of Mexican and American Indian descent and comes from a devout Catholic family, has managed to create two characters people want to hear from (and laugh with) again and again. Those routines and more can be seen at Cache Creek on Saturday. (8 and 10 p.m.; $39, $49; cachecreek.com)
