Miss Iceland quits beauty pageant after being told to lose weight

In 2015, Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir was crown Miss Iceland. Now, she says she has been body shamed, and has left the Miss Grand International beauty contest because of it.

Jónsdóttir wrote about why she left the Miss Grand International event held in Las Vegas, with the final taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016. The 20-year-old former gymnast from Reykjavik, Iceland, posted her hand-written goodbye letter on Instagram after allegedly being asked to lose weight for the final.

Jónsdóttir said in the Iceland Monitor that she was told to “stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and drink water every evening until the contest. (The owner) is telling you this because he likes you and wants you to do well in this contest.” She responded: “If the owner of the contest really… doesn’t like me the the way I am, then he doesn’t deserve to have me…”

The pageant is owned by Thai television personality Nawat Itsaragrisil.
