A large evergreen tree arrived in Old Sacramento on Monday, where officials are expected to decorate it with lights through Christmas.
The arrival of the 58-foot tree, reportedly a white fir, is the latest sign the Christmas season will soon be upon us.
Last week, the downtown Sacramento outdoor ice rink opened at Seventh and K streets near Golden 1 Center.
The Old Sacramento tree was being erected Monday, but wasn’t expected to be illuminated until Nov. 23 – one day before Thanksgiving, the traditional start of the Christmas season.

The tree will be placed at Front and K streets in Old Sacramento. In addition to the Nov. 23 tree lighting, Macy’s is sponsoring a reoccurring Christmas program dubbed “Theater of Lights,” which brings to life the classic “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” poem by Clement Clarke Moore, officially named “A Visit from St. Nicholas.”
