Blue Angels to headline Capital Airshow in October

The Navy flight demonstration squad, the Blue Angels, will perform at the California Capital Airshow in October.

A Blue Angels crew flew into Mather Airport, the site of the annual airshow, on Monday to square away what will be needed Oct. 1-2 for the team to perform at optimal level above the former military base.

Lt. Tyler Davies and Capt. Corrie Mays landed in a blue-and-gold Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, and after a short meeting with the media, planned to speak with local airshow officials.

“We are going to talk to all of the airshow committee personnel on what it takes to put on an airshow,” Davies said. “We want everyone to be on the same page on what it takes to support the team when it is in town.”

Among the items to be discussed are airfield maintenance, ground crew, police, fire, crash rescue and maintenance hangars.

The team will perform flight demonstrations at 35 sites in 2016. The show season begins March 12 and runs each weekend through mid-November.

“This is our 70th year,” he said. “We are very proud to showcase the pride and professionalism of the Navy and Marine Corps.”

He said Blue Angel fliers are with the team for only a couple of years.

“We come from the fleet and then we go back to the fleet,” Davies said. “We show people throughout the United States just how precise your U.S. Navy and Marine Corps team actually is.”

Last year, the Air Force Thunderbirds and Canada’s top demonstration team, the Snowbirds, performed at the Capital Airshow.

He said maneuvers performed by the Blue Angels are different from those of the Thunderbirds, but both teams have the same goals: inspiring youths. The Navy’s flight demonstration team has 15 officers and more than 100 enlisted personnel.

Six aircraft will fly at the Capital Airshow. Davies will be in front of the crowd, narrating the show as it happens. He will tell people where to look and how fast the jets are traveling.

While airshow organizers were prepared on Monday to announce that the Blue Angels would put on their usual impressive flying display, they were not yet ready to announce the other performers.

Ticket information is not yet available.
