Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
ROAD
Paul Reese Memorial Clarksburg Country Run 20-mile, 13.1-mile, 10K, 5K

Where: Delta High School, 52810 Netherlands Road, Clarksburg
Cost: $78 (20-mile); $68 (half); $43 (5K, 10K)
Reason to Run: It’s the 50th running of Sacramento’s oldest road race, started by the late Paul Reese. The half marathon serves as the Pacific section USA Track & Field Half Marathon Road Championship race, so expect all the fast runners to race that distance. The 20-miler is often used by California International Marathon-bound runners as their last long run before the marathon.

TRAIL
Diablo Trail Adventure 13.1-mile, 10K, 5K
When: 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8
Where: Castle Rock Recreation Area, Walnut Creek
Cost: $84 (half); $63 (10K), $58 (5K)
Reason to Run: Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Save Mount Diablo, which for decades has done just that – repelling development while developing environmentally friendly trails. The half marathon is the race to pick if you’re seeking major climbs. You’ll gain 2,492 feet.

Where: J Street, just west of the entrance to the Sacramento State campus
Cost: $35 (until Nov. 21); $20 (youth, 17-under)
Reason to Run: It’s a Sacramento Thanksgiving tradition.
