Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
Roseville Run for Freedom 5K
When: 9:15 a.m. Saturday, March 5
Where: Maidu Park, 1550 Maidu Drive, Roseville
Cost: $30 ($24 children)
Reason to Run: This is a low-key fun run. How low-key? According to the website, there’s no official timing, but a clock will be at the finish line. Proceeds go to the Grace Network, which fights human trafficking.
John Frank Memorial Run 10 Mile/3 Mile
When: 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5
Where: Lake Redding Park, Redding
Cost: $40 (10-mile); $30 (3-mile)
Reason to Run: Unlike the Roseville race, the John Frank is one of the most competitive in the region. Why not give it a shot at either distance, which serves as the championship for the Pacific Association of USA Track and Field? There’s $4,500 in prize money. The women’s field looks particularly strong, with Sacramento locals Jane Kibii (10-mile) and Alycia Cridenberg (3-mile) and Rachel Mitchell (3-mile) registered to run.
Shamrock’n Half Marathon/5K
When: 7:45 a.m. Sunday, March 13
Where: Raley Field, West Sacramento
Reason to Run: Shamrock’n is another race that’s turning into a tradition. Half marathon too long? Try the 5K held at the same location the day before.
