Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
Run 4 Roseville 5K
When: 8:30 a.m., Sunday, April 24
Sign Up and Save
Get six months of free digital access to The Sacramento Bee
Where: Maidu Park, Roseville
Reason to run: Maidu Park is a cross-country course for high school teams, but it’s been converted into a hybrid road race that benefits area schools. There also is a 1-mile run for kids.
Folsom Lake Trail Runs 50K/35K/ Half Marathon, 10K
When: 8 a.m., Saturday, April 23
Where: Folsom Point staging area ($12 parking)
Cost: $80 (50K); $75 (35K); $60 (half); $50 (10K)
Reason to run: As 50Ks go, this one has very little elevation gain (2,850 feet) but, beware, it’s a lot of jagged, ups-and-downs that take a toll in the final miles. The views figure to be better this year than in previous runnings, since the water level is up at the lake.
I Love the ’80s 5K/10K
When: 9 a.m. (10K), 9:15 a.m. (5K); May 1
Where: Vernon Street Town Square, Roseville
Cost: $40 (5K); $45 (10K); $35 (5K or 10K 14 and under)
Reason to run: Celebrate the decade that made workout clothing fashionable with this fun run set to totally tubular tunes. Post-race activities include a “gnarly dance party” and a costume contest with awards for best ’80s outfits.
