Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
Davis Moonlight Half Marathon, 10 Mile, 10K, 5K
When: Saturday, 7 p.m. (Half, 10M and 10K); 7:15 (5K)
Where: DMG Mori, 3805 Faraday Ave., Davis
Cost: $33 (5K, 10K); $55 (10-mile, Half)
Reason to Run: Running at night can be sublime. Sure, you’ll start off before dusk and it figures to still be blazing hot in Davis, but eventually the night will envelop you. If you’re really speedy, it won’t be completely dark as you finish.
Chanoko Trail Run (30K, 10K) and Team Relay Challenge
When: 7 a.m. (30K individual); 8 a.m. (10 K); 8:05 (30K and 90K relay teams)
Where: Granite Beach, Folsom
Cost: $50 (10K); $60 (30K); $130 (30K relay); $160 (90K)
Reason to Run: Grab a few buddies and hit the trails around Folsom State Recreation Area for a new relay from the Total Body Fitness folks. Of course, if you’re a loner, you can run the 30K or 10K solo. There may not be any major climbs on this course, but the cumulative ups and downs can prove challenging.
June Lake Traithlon (half-ironman, Olympic, sprint)
When: 7 a.m. (half); 8 a.m. (Olympic); 9 a.m. (sprint)
Where: June Lake, Mono County
Cost: $$295 (half); $175 (Olympic); $125 (sprint)
Reason to Compete: Organizers dub this the “Toughest Race in the most beautiful place,” and it’s hard to argue. You’ll be competing at 7,600 feet elevation, so we hope you’ve been training at altitude. Triathlete magazine picked this race as one of the top 22 in the nation.
