Running for health and exercise is virtuous, but sometimes you just want to pin on a bib number and race against hundreds of others. Here’s our weekly best bet for races of various lengths and surfaces.
My Sister’s House Run for Safe Haven 5K Run/Walk
When: 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24
Where: William Land Park, Sacramento
Cost: $40 (adults); $25 (youth, 21 and under)
Reason to Run: This is the 12th year My Sister’s House, which helps domestic violence survivors, has put on the race as its main fundraiser. It’s run on the popular flat, fast Land Park course.
Sac River Trail Races Marathon, 15K, Mile
When: 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24
Where: Shasta Dam Visitors Center, 16349 Shasta Dam Blvd., Shasta Lake
Cost: $60 (marathon); $25 (15K); $10 (mile)
Reason to Run:Get up a little early to make it to the Redding area for a point-to-point hybrid/trail road marathon from Shasta Dam to the Sundial Bridge. It’s a relatively flat course (800 feet elevation gain) run on singletrack and, for the last 5 miles, paved river trail. The 15K is a trail loop that actually is hillier than the marathon.
Run to Feed the Hungry 10K, 5K
When: 8:15 a.m. (10K); 9 a.m. (5K) Thursday, Nov. 26
Where: J Street, just west of the entrance to the Sacramento State campus
Cost: $35 (until Nov. 21); $20 (youth, 17-under)
Reason to Run: It’s a Sacramento Thanksgiving tradition. Sure, it’s crowded and parking is a pain, but the race itself is loads of fun, as is the camaraderie and the fact that proceeds go to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.
