Giving Tuesday: A day to take a break from spending to donate to a nonprofit

There was Black Friday, Cyber Monday and today is about giving back. It's “Giving Tuesday,” a nationwide effort to encourage giving to charitable causes during the holiday season.

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday is all about spending, Giving Tuesday is about donating.

As the website says: “Giving Tuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy.”

The drive was created five years ago by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City.

The effort involves major sponsors like Bill and Melinda Gates, as well as participating local organizations, ranging from animal care to health issues to the arts to environmental causes.

Among the Sacramento-based groups taking part: Crocker Art Museum, St. Hope Public Schools, First Tee of Greater Sacramento and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary.
