Kudos to: Bella Vista High School student Brian Nguyen

Accomplishment: He will perform in the halftime show of the U.S. Army’s All-American Bowl game

Details: The All-American Bowl features top high school athletes. Likewise, the best student musicians are picked for the 125-member marching band. Nguyen was chosen from among thousands to play his sousaphone in January at the Alamodome in San Antonio, according to a San Juan Unified School District newsletter.

Kudos to: Volunteers who packed meals for malnourished children

Accomplishment: About 2,500 volunteers packed nearly 521,000 meals during a “Feed My Starving Children MobilePack” in Rocklin

Details: The meals, expected to go to Haiti, Guatemala and the Philippines, were packed at William Jessup University in Rocklin over a three-day period. Volunteers came from two dozen churches, major corporations and civic groups.

Kudos to: Pioneer High School FFA

Accomplishment: Placed first overall in Yolo Sectional BIG (Best Informed Greenhand) and Cooperative Marketing contest

Details: The BIG contest is for freshman agriculture students who take a test on their knowledge of the National FFA organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America.
