Applause: Kudos to Roseville Walmart, Oak Ridge High debaters, UC Davis professors

Kudos to: A kindly stranger at Walmart

Accomplishment: Bought school supplies for Orchard School third-graders

Details: Teacher Mary Morte was at the Roseville Walmart to buy markers, colored pencils and other items for her students. A man asked if she was a teacher and then insisted on paying for the supplies. Her students have written letters thanking him for the random act of kindness.

Kudos to: Shaheryar Ajmal and Sanjay Raavi, Oak Ridge High School students

Accomplishment: Earned 14th place at the National Speech & Debate Tournament in public forum debate

Details: The two students surpassed hundreds of other debaters in becoming the only high school juniors in the top ranks. They had to become experts on international relations among Russia, Ukraine, the United States and NATO.

Kudos to: Two UC Davis professors

Accomplishment: Accorded honorary doctorates

Details: Gurdev Khush’s honorary degree is from McGill University, Toronto, and Alex McCalla’s honorary degree is from the University of Alberta. Khush is known for his work in rice breeding that led to self-sufficiency in major rice-producing countries. McCalla, an emeritus professor and recognized authority on world food policy, trade and economic development, led an effort to revitalize the World Bank’s commitment to rural development.
