Kudos to: Tracy Whipple, fundraiser

Accomplishment: Raised $4,300 for Orangevale Food Bank

Details: Whipple organized fundraisers to raise money at Rollingwood Athletic Club in Fair Oaks, where she works. She spent two months raising money for the food bank, which provides fresh food to neighbors in need.

Kudos to: Mike Gorton, blood donor

Accomplishment: Inducted into the Fenwal Blood Donation Hall of Fame

Details: Gorton has donated nearly 300 units of blood. He donates plasma, a blood component needed by patients experiencing massive blood loss and by mothers with post-childbirth complications. He also volunteers at BloodSource blood drives.

Kudos to: Karima Bennoune, author

Accomplishment: Winner in nonfiction category of Dayton Literary Peace Prize

Details: Bennoune, a professor at the UC Davis School of Law, was honored for her book “Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight Against Muslim Fundamentalism.” She profiles people across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
